Supreme Seafood Chef’ – Jason Blackie
Nelson’s annual seafood festival,
‘Hooked on Seafood’, invited 120 established restaurants
from around the country to enter into a competition to create
New Zealand’s best seafood dish. The four finalists then
went down to Nelson for the final cook off, the winner being awarded
the tittle of ‘National Supreme Seafood Chef’. The
competition was so successful they decided to make it the backbone
of the festival. |

New Zealand Beef and Lamb
Ambassador – Executive Chef Jason Blackie
Between May and July each year the New Zealand Beef and Lamb Marketing
Bureau anonymously assess restaurants on their beef and lamb main
dishes. From this assessment the board give out awards and ambassadorships.
Only restaurants that reach a sufficiently high standard receive
a hallmark of excellence award and only chefs that exhibit exceptional
skills get the tittle of Ambassador. Jason was one of only 6 chefs
given this tittle and the only one in Auckland. |

| Corbans’ Wine and Food Challenge |
Overall winner - Twice winner

The Challenge of the Corbans' wine and food competition was to create
a three-course menu that matched wines with food flavours. The judging
panel was an independent board of Food Writers, Wine Experts and
the previous winner. Over one hundred restaurants entered from all
over New Zealand. In 2003 the competition was taken over by Montana
wines and is hence called the 'Montana Wine and Food Challenge'
now. |

Restaurant of the Year is a competition held during the annual National
Hospitality Show at the Auckland Show Grounds. The judging panel
is made up of directors from Hospitality Schools around the country
as well as famous New Zealand chefs. |

Induction in to The Hall of
Fame – Valerie Littlejohn
Sails Restaurant’s Director, Valerie Littlejohn, was the first
woman to be inducted in to the New Zealand Restaurant Association’s
Hall of Fame. This was in recognition of her nearly fifty years
experience in, and contribution to, the hospitality industry in
New Zealand. Valerie, and her late husband Phillip, opened their
first restaurant, Orsinis, in Wellington in 1958. |
