The wine list at Sails Restaurant
is both comprehensive and interesting.
The cellar style list focuses predominantly on wine from top New
Zealand vineyards but also includes renowned Australian and French
wines.
The most extensive selections are in the more popular varieties
like Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir but Sails also source
unusual varieties like Viognier and Chenin Blanc.
Add to this the rare vintages the restaurant is renowned for and
you have one of New Zealand’s most impressive wine selections.

A famous German poet was once asked what three things
he would take to a deserted island. He said, “Poetry, a beautiful,
intelligent woman and enough bottles of the world’s finest
wine to survive the dry period.”
He was then asked what he would leave behind if he could only take
two and he briefly replied, “The poetry”.
Slightly surprised, the man asked,” And Sir, what would you
leave behind if you could only take one?” The poet thought
for a moment and then answered, “It depends on the vintage.”
It depends on the vintage’, sums up the philosophy behind
Sails Restaurant’s cellar style wine selection.
Sails Restaurant understands the importance ‘the year’
plays in determining the quality of a wine and they go out of their
way to source exceptional vintages.
This is not easy as great vintages are often years of low yield
and high demand, but by building relationships directly with the
vineyards, using multiple suppliers and purchasing from private
cellars, Sails is able to fulfil the demand for excellence.
