Because wine is an important factor in the Sails dining experience, we are one of the few New Zealand restaurants still offering dedicated wine professionals to select and care for your wine.


We have a team of very experienced and knowledgeable sommeliers to help you select from more than two hundred wines.

The list features rare and vintage wines and includes the best from New Zealand wineries as well as outstanding examples from overseas. Because we source from private cellars and directly from boutique wineries, we can offer wines not normally available, in vintages that are rarely seen. You will always find something unusual and interesting on the wine list at Sails Restaurant.

In keeping with our commitment to optimising your experience, we recently installed a bank of temperature-controlled cabinets for red wine preservation, and pay careful attention to the temperature at which wine is served and the style of glass in which it is presented. At Sails, we honour all these factors that contribute to your dining experience.

A famous poet was once asked what three things he would take to a deserted island. He said, “Poetry, a beautiful, intelligent woman and enough bottles of the world’s finest wine to survive the dry period.”

He was then asked what he would leave behind if he could only take two and he briefly replied, “The poetry.”

Slightly surprised, the man asked, “And Sir, what would you leave behind if you could only take one?” The poet thought for a moment and then answered, “It depends on the vintage.”
